Setúbal City Council approves creation of Municipal Police

The Setúbal City Council has approved a proposal to create a Municipal Police force, which will initially consist of at least 40 agents. The plan includes progressive recruitment and patrolling models tailored to specific parishes.

The new force will have jurisdiction over urbanism, construction, environmental protection, and cultural heritage. Additionally, the police will manage parking regulations, road traffic compliance, and the execution of municipal administrative acts. This initiative fulfills an electoral promise made by the elected president, Maria das Dores Meira.

The proposal, which passed by a majority vote, must still be reviewed by the Municipal Assembly.
