Setúbal establishes new Municipal Police force with 40 agents
The Setúbal Municipal Council has approved the creation of a new Municipal Police force consisting of 40 agents. The regulation, recently published in the Diário da República, establishes the force's structure and competencies under the authority of the municipal president.
The agents will be hired progressively and will implement various patrolling models tailored to the municipality's five parishes. Key responsibilities include monitoring traffic, parking, and speed limits, as well as supervising public spaces, school zones, and local urban transport. The force will also handle environmental inspections, urban planning oversight, and the protection of heritage.
The municipality cited the need to address challenges such as tourism pressure, illegal parking, environmental infractions, and economic activity regulation—particularly near Arrábida beaches during the summer season. The new force will have the authority to issue fines, inspect construction sites, and ensure the execution of administrative decisions, including demolition orders.
