Wildfires in Coimbra district controlled after merging in Arganil

Large-scale wildfires in the Coimbra district, specifically affecting Arganil, Vila Nova de Poiares, and Cantanhede, have been brought under control. The blaze in Arganil and Vila Nova de Poiares resulted from the merger of three separate fires that began on Saturday. At its peak, the operation involved over 800 personnel, 260 vehicles, and 15 aerial assets.

During the firefighting efforts, the Commander of the Arganil Volunteer Firefighters was injured after being struck by a GNR vehicle during maneuvers. He sustained a fracture to his arm but is reported to be in stable condition. Additionally, three other firefighters sustained minor injuries due to smoke inhalation.

Authorities managed to protect several villages, including Sabouga, which was in the direct line of fire. While some residents in the Góis municipality were evacuated as a precaution, they have since returned home. The burned area is estimated to be approximately 600 hectares. Other fires in Cantanhede and Tábua were also reported to be in the resolution phase.
