Festival do Rio 2026 begins with over 300 films

The 28th edition of the Festival do Rio is underway in Rio de Janeiro, running from October 1 to 11, 2026. The festival features a massive selection of over 300 films, including international award winners from Cannes, Berlin, Venice, and Locarno, as well as numerous Brazilian productions.

A central component is the Première Brasil showcase, which highlights new Brazilian films. Notable entries include ‘Feito Pipa’ by Allan Deberton, which is set to represent Brazil for the 2027 Oscars, and ‘A Margem do Rio’, a Locarno prize winner. The festival also includes high-profile guest appearances, such as Spanish producer Esther Garcia on the Première Brasil jury and Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, who will participate in public discussions.

This year’s edition introduces a new partnership with the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), which will host 19 films, including world premieres and gala sessions, at its cultural center. The festival aims to democratize access to cinema through free screenings at various locations across the city, including the FGV Esplanada and several community centers.
