Setúbal's Mercado do Livramento Marks 150 Years as Cultural and Economic Hub

The historic Mercado do Livramento in Setúbal celebrated its 150th anniversary, commemorating the market that opened on 31 July 1876. The ceremony, attended by local officials, merchants and visitors, featured councilor Paulo Maia highlighting the market’s role as a symbol of the city’s identity and a driver of the local economy.

Maia noted that the market employs between 500 and 600 people directly and supports thousands of indirect jobs, while attracting thousands of tourists each year with its fresh fish, seafood and agricultural products. The event also marked the continuation of a renovation project aimed at modernising the building, with exterior painting and other upgrades scheduled for completion by the end of August.

The celebration underscored the market’s importance for sustainable short‑supply chains, the preservation of family‑run fishing and farming, and its status as a landmark of Setúbal’s urban, economic and social evolution.
