SETI Institute researchers propose searching Moon for signs of alien intelligence

Researchers from the SETI Institute have proposed a novel method for searching for extraterrestrial intelligence by examining lunar material rather than scanning deep space for radio or laser signals.

Instead of using telescopes to look for active signals from distant planets or galaxies, the team suggests using microscopes and industrial material analysis to search for artificially manufactured particles embedded in Moon dust and rocks. Because the Moon acts as a long-term archive for galactic material, this approach could allow scientists to detect evidence of past technological civilizations that may no longer be active.

The study, currently undergoing peer review for the International Journal of Astrobiology, models how such particles might travel through space and settle on the Moon. Researchers propose using advanced laboratory techniques, including AI-supported imaging, to identify these potential technosignatures.
