SETI project searches for technosignatures in space

The Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is a global scientific initiative focused on detecting signs of intelligent life in space. Rather than searching for biological entities directly, the project seeks technosignatures—observable traces of technology such as radio emissions, laser pulses, or unusual energy patterns that do not align with known natural processes.

Originating formally in 1960 with Frank Drake’s Project Ozma, the field has evolved significantly. Drake also developed the Drake Equation to estimate the potential number of technological civilizations in our galaxy. Notable historical moments include the 1977 detection of the ‘Wow! signal’, a mysterious candidate that has never been repeated.

Modern SETI efforts involve a collaborative network of universities, observatories, and specialized organizations like the SETI Institute. Researchers utilize advanced technology, including the Allen Telescope Array (ATA), to monitor the cosmos. While the search has historically focused on radio waves, the vast distances of space and interference from stars, galaxies, and human-made satellites present ongoing challenges in distinguishing artificial signals from cosmic noise.
