SETI scientists propose searching Moon for alien debris

A team of scientists associated with the SETI Institute has proposed a study to search for microscopic remnants of extraterrestrial civilizations within lunar soil. The research, currently under peer review for the International Journal of Astrobiology, suggests that advanced technological infrastructures could erode over time, releasing tiny particles into space that may eventually settle on planetary surfaces like the Moon.

Lead researcher Lewis Pinault, an affiliate scientist at the SETI Institute and a researcher at Birkbeck College, University of London, posits that if other technological civilizations have existed in the galaxy, their debris might be present on the Moon in measurable quantities. The study models how alien infrastructure might weather and disperse through the galaxy, drawing parallels to how human satellites shed microscopic material into space.

Sofia Sheikh, a scientist at the SETI Institute specializing in hypothetical alien technologies known as “technosignatures,” described the approach as a “creative and worthwhile avenue” for addressing whether humanity is alone in the universe.
