Sevastopol bombing: Russian woman accused of killing defected submarine commander
Russian authorities have arrested 32-year-old Margarita Reut in connection with a bombing in Sevastopol that killed Robert Mansurovici Shageev, a former Ukrainian submarine commander who defected to Russia in 2014.
Investigators allege that Reut, a Russian citizen originally from Yaroslavl, planted an explosive device in a trash can near a bench on Stoletovski Boulevard. The explosion occurred as Shageev was descending a staircase, resulting in his immediate death. Russian officials claim Reut was recruited by Ukrainian intelligence services and was paid in cryptocurrency to carry out the attack.
Reut, who has previously worked as a biologist and a travel agent and has reportedly appeared on escort websites, is facing terrorism charges. According to the FSB, she showed no remorse during questioning and had allegedly planned to flee the country via Sochi following the incident. She currently faces a potential prison sentence of up to 30 years.
