Seven & i Holdings forms 3‑trillion‑yen partnership with SoftBank, PayPay and Sumitomo Mitsui Card
On July 31, Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd., the parent of 7‑Eleven Japan, announced a strategic capital partnership with SoftBank Group Corp., PayPay Corporation and Sumitomo Mitsui Card Co., Ltd. Each investor will contribute 1 trillion yen, giving them roughly a 2.3 % equity stake after a 400 billion‑yen share‑buyback program. The agreement links Seven & i’s digital platform “7iD” to PayPay ID, creates a joint customer base and enables PayPay points and V points to be earned and spent at 7‑Eleven stores. It also opens cooperation on store‑operation automation, supply‑chain optimisation, energy management and AI‑driven services. The deal is presented as a means to accelerate the group’s digital services and to reinforce its defence against activist shareholders, following a withdrawn hostile takeover attempt by Alimentation Couche‑Tard.
The partnership is expected to boost foot traffic to 7‑Eleven outlets, deepen the payment and loyalty ecosystem, and provide Seven & i with new technology and financial resources to modernise its retail infrastructure.
