Seven Viseu municipalities join Águas do Douro e Paiva

Seven municipalities in the Viseu district have approved their membership in Águas do Douro e Paiva, the entity responsible for the multi-municipal water supply system in the Greater Porto region. The participating municipalities are Viseu, Mangualde, Nelas, Penalva do Castelo, Sátão, São Pedro do Sul, and Vouzela.

This expansion increases the company’s reach to 27 municipalities and expands its intervention area from 2,715 to 4,446 square kilometers. The project aims to improve water security and resilience against scarcity by interconnecting the Lever system, sourced from the Douro River, with the Fagilde system.

Planned investments include the construction of a new water treatment station in Fagilde, a new dam on the Dão River, new pipelines, and the modernization of existing infrastructure. The integration will be carried out in phases following the formalization of legal and contractual agreements with the Ministry of Environment and Energy.
