Theni sub-jail inmates escape in Tamil Nadu after assaulting guards

Seventeen undertrial prisoners escaped from the Thekkampatti sub-jail in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district late on the night of October 26. The inmates allegedly staged a medical emergency, claiming one prisoner was suffering from an epileptic fit, to lure prison staff into their shared cell. Once the staff entered, the inmates launched a coordinated assault and fled the premises.

Three prison officials were injured during the attack. A Grade-II police constable, Thangapandi, sustained a head injury and was hospitalized at the Government Hospital in G Vilakku, while two other personnel suffered minor injuries. In response to the breach, several prison staff members have been suspended for dereliction of duty.

Law enforcement has launched a massive multi-district manhunt. As of the latest reports, five of the escapees have been recaptured, leaving 12 still at large. Inspector General of Police (South Zone) Vijayendra Bidari confirmed that 17 special teams have been formed to track the fugitives. Authorities have established 16 checkpoints in the neighboring Dindigul district and intensified vehicle inspections along routes leading to Kerala, specifically in the Idukki district.

The incident has triggered political criticism, with opposition leaders questioning the state government’s ability to maintain law and order and prison security.
