Severance Cardiovascular Hospital reaches 10,000 atrial fibrillation procedures

Severance Cardiovascular Hospital has reached a milestone of 10,000 cumulative atrial fibrillation procedures, marking the first and highest number achieved by a single medical institution in South Korea.

The breakdown of procedures includes 7,546 radiofrequency ablation cases, 1,271 pulsed field ablation (PFA) cases, and 1,183 cryoballoon ablation cases. The 10,000th procedure, performed on September 1, was a pulsed field ablation on a 72-year-old female patient with persistent atrial fibrillation.

Since starting atrial fibrillation ablation in 1998, the hospital has seen rapid growth, reaching 1,000 cases in 2012 and 5,000 in February 2022. The hospital has also led the adoption of new technologies, such as PFA, which offers shorter procedure times and fewer complications. Severance has been designated as both a domestic and international training center for pulsed field ablation to educate medical professionals worldwide.
