Severe Drought Hits Romania's Someș River Basin

Historic low water flows have been recorded across the Someș‑Tisa catchment in north‑west Romania. At least 12 hydrometric stations reported zero discharge, and 34 of 103 monitoring points registered flows at or below the historic daily minimum for August 5. In several sub‑basins, including Crasna, Tur, Lăpuș, Someșul Inferior and Someșul Mic, current discharges are under 10‑25 % of long‑term averages. The Vârșolț reservoir on the Crasna River holds the lowest water volume seen in a decade, raising concerns about water supply.

Despite the national climate‑adaptation strategy forecasting a 6 % increase in water resources for the Someș basin by mid‑century, actual conditions in early August 2026 show flows below 30 % of monthly norms. Researchers from the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management note that while precipitation is expected to rise modestly in the basin, the current drought underscores the need for careful water management.
