Four Corners region hit by historic flooding and emergency rescues
Severe, once-in-a-generation flooding has struck the Four Corners region of the United States, impacting Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. Driven by a powerful Pacific storm system and heavy rainfall on saturated ground, the flooding has caused significant property damage, road closures, and life-threatening situations.
In New Mexico, approximately 600 households in Farmington were ordered to evacuate as the San Juan and Animas rivers surged. Emergency responders, including the New Mexico National Guard, utilized boats, helicopters, and amphibious vehicles to perform numerous rescues, including pulling residents from rooftops and homes inundated with several feet of water. An infant suffering from seizures was also rescued by the National Guard.
In Colorado, the San Juan River reached levels three feet higher than a previous 100-year flood. Emergency declarations were issued for 11 southwestern counties, and rescuers used helicopters to lift people from submerged recreational vehicles. In Utah, the city of Hurricane declared a state of emergency after flooding affected 80 homes and 50 RVs.
In Arizona, heavy thunderstorms caused Wet Beaver Creek in Yavapai County to rise nearly 4 feet, resulting in the helicopter rescue of four people stranded on the roof of a submerged SUV. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as more rain is forecast for the region.
