Severe floods in China's Chongqing and Hunan kill at least 12 and leave dozens missing

Heavy rainfall that began on the night of May 24 spread across southwestern China, triggering flash floods and landslides. In Chongqing's Yongchuan district, the deluge prompted a Level‑3 emergency response, caused at least nine deaths and left more than ten people unaccounted for.

At the same time, Hunan province's Shimen County experienced unprecedented rains, raising its death toll to seven and leaving 14 people missing. Rescue teams continue search‑and‑rescue operations across the affected areas, and the central government has allocated 50 million yuan (about US$73 million) for relief and reconstruction in Hunan.
