Severe floods strike Segovia, Antioquia, Colombia

Intense rain fell overnight on June 17‑18, 2024, causing severe flooding across the municipality of Segovia in northeast Antioquia. The deluge affected at least 18 neighborhoods, with water levels reaching up to 50 cm and turning streets into rivers. Families lost belongings and suffered material damage; the municipal government opened the Abel Rivera Villa sports complex as an emergency shelter.

Mayor Edwin Castañeda activated the municipal disaster‑risk council and coordinated response teams, including local fire brigades, the civil defence, and the Red Cross. Flood‑related landslides, fallen trees and a fire sparked by an alleged short‑circuit added to the damage. No fatalities were reported, and authorities continue to assess the full impact and distribute aid.
