Severe hailstorm and brief tornado hit northeastern Hungary

On Monday, July 27, a powerful storm swept through the northeastern tip of Hungary, producing large hail the size of walnuts and a narrow band of intense winds. The storm originated in Slovakia around mid‑afternoon, moved southeast across the Carpathian region and continued into Romania, but its strongest impacts were felt in Hungary’s Szabolcs‑Szatmar‑Bereg county.

In the village of Fülesd and nearby towns such as Sonka, Tiszabecs and Milot, trees were toppled and roofs damaged; witnesses recorded a short‑lived rotating wind gust that behaved like a tornado, knocking down a line of trees on one street. One resident described the phenomenon as “the most frightening weather I have ever seen.” The event was captured on a car’s dash‑cam and reported by local media.
