Severe hailstorm sweeps across Hungary, shattering crops and cars

Intense supercell thunderstorms crossed western Hungary on Wednesday night, delivering large hail, strong winds and heavy rain. In Vas and Zala counties, ice pellets up to 2–4 cm in diameter – some described as walnut‑size – fell, covering gardens and orchards with a white layer and damaging fruit trees, vegetable plots and parked vehicles. Winds reached 60–85 km/h, and lightning‑induced flash floods were reported in several localities.

The event caused significant material loss; insurers note repair costs for a typical car start at around 400,000 forints. In response, a free hail‑ and storm‑alert service was launched to warn residents of future severe weather in the region.
