Severe injuries and hospital transfers challenge Colombian healthcare

Mileidy Naranjo was hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Hospital San José del Guaviare after a traffic accident in the Guaviare region left her with a brain hemorrhage, nose and ear bleeding, and a critical condition that required intubation. Her husband, Victor Álvarez, has asked health authorities to expedite her transfer to a third- or fourth‑level hospital, citing the need for specialized procedures unavailable at the local facility.

Separately, eight‑month‑old Mairon David Castañeda Ángel died following a severe head injury that occurred in Acevedo. He was first taken to a local hospital, then transferred to Hospital Departamental San Antonio de Pitalito and later to the pediatric intensive care unit of Hospital Universitario Hernando Moncaleano Perdomo in Neiva. Despite intensive care, he succumbed to his injuries on 23 July. A forensic autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.
