Severe Monsoon Downpour Causes Record Flooding in Lahore

A rain emergency was declared in Lahore after a monsoon spell dropped a record 263 mm of rain in the Airport area, flooding underpasses, roads and low‑lying neighbourhoods. The deluge overwhelmed the city’s drainage system, leaving major thoroughfares impassable and forcing residents to use boats in some residential districts. Lahore Commissioner Nauman Yousaf said the city “initially received light to moderate rain of up to 50 mm, but later turned severe,” prompting authorities to deploy teams from WASA, the Lahore Metropolitan Corporation and the LDA, along with heavy machinery, to drain standing water.

The flooding resulted in two fatalities when a motorcycle crashed near Kahna and an additional four people were injured after a roof collapse in DHA Phase IV. Traffic disruption, property damage and water entering homes were reported across several localities. Officials continued drainage operations and urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel as further rain was forecast.
