Severe storms cause damage in Winterthur and Allensbach

Severe weather conditions caused widespread damage and emergency responses across parts of Germany and Switzerland on August 28, 2026.

In Winterthur, Switzerland, a violent storm featuring table-tennis-ball-sized hail struck the Wülflingen and Oberwinterthur districts. The storm caused several minor injuries and significant property damage, including broken skylights, smashed vehicle rear windows, and damaged roofs. The Winterthur Police and fire services received approximately 50 emergency calls regarding fallen trees, loose branches, and damaged structures. Authorities advised residents to exercise caution around trees and damaged roofs.

In Allensbach, Germany, heavy storms prompted numerous interventions by the local fire department. Emergency crews cleared fallen trees from roadways in the Langenrain area and addressed a detached awning on a roof. While water was reported in a basement, no direct fire department intervention was required for that specific incident. The Allensbach fire department also provided assistance to neighboring Radolfzell, deploying a turntable ladder to help manage five separate emergency sites.
