Severe storms cause fatalities in Mexico and tornadoes in Sicily
Severe weather events have caused fatalities and injuries in Mexico and Italy. In Mexico, Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel resulted in at least five deaths and left several people missing. In the state of Guerrero, a 71-year-old man died when a wall collapsed. In Baja California, four members of a single family, including two children, died near Ensenada due to Tropical Storm Rachel.
In Sicily, Italy, two tornadoes struck the coastal town of Marsala, injuring dozens of people. At least 11 individuals were hospitalized, including a 70-year-old man in critical condition. The storms caused significant property damage, including a school where 273 students were safely evacuated after several children sustained minor injuries. The damage included broken windows and overturned furniture.
Meteorologists note that rising Mediterranean temperatures may contribute to the formation of rare, hurricane-like storms known as 'medicane' in the region.
