Severe storms cause widespread damage across southern Brazil

Severe storms, high winds, and heavy rainfall have caused widespread damage across several regions in southern Brazil, prompting emergency declarations and rescue operations.

In Rio Grande do Sul, Nova Santa Rita declared a state of emergency after winds exceeding 100 km/h destroyed or damaged approximately 500 homes. The state reported over 717,000 power outages, with winds reaching 115.8 km/h in São Jerônimo. In Taquara, the storm caused roof damage to numerous residences and five municipal schools, while also obstructing roads with fallen trees.

In Santa Catarina, heavy rains and hail led to flooding and isolated residents. In Bom Jardim da Serra, firefighters rescued a family that had become stranded due to rising water and debris. The Civil Defense issued red alerts for several municipalities, including Lages and Urubici, citing high risks of lightning, wind gusts, and flash floods.
