Europe hit by extreme storms, flooding, and high winds
A series of extreme weather events has swept across Europe, characterized by violent storms, heavy rainfall, and high winds. In Spain, the Valencia region experienced a sudden shift from intense heat to severe storms with wind gusts reaching 150 km/h, causing structural damage and blocking roads.
Northern Italy has also been heavily impacted. In the Lignano resort area, wind gusts hit 108 km/h, while parts of Lombardy, Liguria, and Tuscany saw rainfall exceeding 300 mm, leading to landslides and river flooding. In Isola di Fondra, authorities evacuated 250 people from a campsite.
Further north, Germany and France faced significant disruptions. A storm near Berlin resulted in one fatality, and southeastern France saw nearly 26,000 households lose power. Across the continent, detectors recorded hundreds of thousands of lightning strikes, with ESTOFEX having previously warned of the severe conditions.
