El Niño and severe storms cause widespread damage in Europe

Severe weather events are impacting multiple regions, highlighted by a potentially historic El Niño phenomenon and destructive storms in Central Europe.

The British Met Office has warned that the current El Niño development in the Pacific could be the strongest in modern history. This phenomenon, which increases global temperatures, may lead to 2027 becoming the warmest year on record. Ocean temperatures in some areas have already risen more than 2°C above normal.

In Slovakia, a powerful windstorm has caused widespread destruction, particularly in the southern regions of Rimavská Sobota and Lučenec. The storm resulted in torn roofs, fallen trees, and significant damage to buildings and infrastructure. Stredoslovenská distribučná (SSD) declared an energy calamity after more than 30,000 connection points experienced power outages, with over 6,000 locations remaining without electricity following the storm.

Meanwhile, in Germany, heavy rainfall has caused local flooding in Bavaria, and tornadoes have been reported in regions such as Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse, causing structural damage and uprooting trees.
