Italian wildfires and heatwave intensify, prompting emergency response
A persistent African anticyclone is driving a record heatwave across Italy, with temperatures forecast to reach 42 °C and high humidity creating tropical‑night conditions. A brief weakening of the high pressure offers only a short respite, leaving most of the country exposed to extreme heat.
Multiple wildfires are straining emergency services. In the Rome province, a sterpaglie fire broke out on Via di Ciampino, requiring several fire brigades and an autobotte for water supply. In the high Valsessera area, flames have moved toward the Cavallero sanctuary, with Canadair aircraft supporting ground crews. On Monte Piastra in Valdieri, the blaze has burned over 90 ha, prompting road closures, evacuation of the Desertetto hamlet and the deployment of helicopters and a Canadair.
Environmental monitoring continues alongside the crises. The Ipla entomological surveillance program completed a round of sampling at 28 stations, capturing more than 9,000 mosquitoes in the Novara and VCO regions. A separate initiative coordinated a team effort to protect fish habitats during the ongoing drought.
In Biella, local officials are considering a proposal to transform the historic Capannina dei Giardini into an intergenerational centre that would host senior activities by day and a youth bar in the evenings, aiming to revitalize the building and improve safety.
