Severe thunderstorms wreck trees and power lines in Iowa and Washington DC region

A severe thunderstorm swept through the Des Moines metro area, uprooting and snapping numerous trees, blocking roads and causing hundreds of power outages across downtown and surrounding suburbs. Emergency crews are working to clear debris and restore electricity, and no injuries have been reported so far.

Later that night, a separate storm moved through the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, toppling trees onto homes and power lines in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. The falling trees killed two women—one on the Matthew Henson Trail in Aspen Hill and another in the Marlton area of Prince George’s. A downed live wire also ignited a vehicle fire in Silver Spring. Restoration crews continue to clear debris and restore power while additional storms are forecast.

Both incidents highlight the danger of strong winds and fallen trees during severe thunderstorms, prompting officials to advise residents to avoid downed trees and power lines and to stay updated on safety information.
