Italy weather: severe storms and red alerts for Sardinia and Southern regions
Severe weather is impacting several regions across Italy, with the Civil Protection Department issuing high-level alerts. Sardinia is facing a red alert for thunderstorms and hydrogeological risks, particularly in the Gallura region and the Flumendosa-Flumineddu basins. Local authorities in Olbia Settimo Nizzi have ordered the closure of schools, public offices, and parks as a precaution against intense rainfall and potential flooding.
In Southern Italy, Puglia and parts of Basilicata remain under orange alerts for thunderstorms and hydrogeological risks. Sicily is also experiencing significant instability, with the recent Agneta storm causing damage in Palermo and Ragusa, including fallen trees and localized flooding. While a brief period of clearing is expected in some areas, meteorologists warn of a new weather system approaching from the Iberian Peninsula, which is expected to bring renewed rain and storms to Sicily, Sardinia, and parts of the Tyrrhenian coast by Thursday, November 5.
Other regions, including Abruzzo, Calabria, Campania, and parts of Sicily, are under yellow alerts for hydraulic and hydrogeological risks. Residents are advised to exercise caution due to strong winds, rough seas, and the potential for rapid rises in river levels.
