Australia braces for severe storms and flooding
A powerful weather system is impacting eastern Australia, bringing a “trifecta” of large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall to several states. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for millions of residents, specifically targeting areas in Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and Victoria.
In Queensland, southeast regions have experienced extreme rainfall, with some areas recording two to four times their average October totals. Significant flooding has been reported in the Wide Bay-Burnett region, and authorities are monitoring the Maroochy, Mooloolah, Stanley, Warrill Creek, and Bremer rivers.
In New South Wales, severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued for the Illawarra and Riverina regions, with risks of flash flooding and damaging winds. Meteorologists indicate that a cold front and trough moving through the state could lead to localized power outages and damage to property and crops. While some storm activity has weakened, humid conditions may trigger further severe weather throughout the week.
