Europe faces extreme weather, from marine heatwaves to severe storms
Europe is facing a period of extreme weather, characterized by record-breaking marine temperatures and severe atmospheric disturbances. A study by World Weather Attribution indicates that human-induced climate change has significantly warmed European waters, with the Mediterranean seeing an additional 2°C of heat compared to global averages.
In Germany, the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) has issued multiple warnings. Regions in the west, including North Rhine-Westphalia, have faced severe storms, heavy rain, and hail. A tornado was reported in Fürstenwalde/Spree, Brandenburg, causing property damage. Additionally, parts of Germany are experiencing intense heatwaves, with temperatures in cities like Cologne expected to reach up to 38°C.
Simultaneously, the northern Adriatic region, including parts of Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, is under threat of catastrophic flooding. Meteorologists warn of supercells and heavy storms moving through the Po Valley and across the upper Adriatic, increasing the risk of tornadoes and intense precipitation.
