Sevilla faces disputes over public space and local symbols

Tensions are rising in Sevilla regarding the management of public spaces and local symbols. The political party VOX has criticized the municipal government’s handling of the ‘Emporio del Orbe’ event, arguing that the city’s official banner (pendón de Cádiz) was sidelined in favor of a newly created flag. The party also called for the restoration of Admiral Juan Ruiz de Apodaca’s name in the city's street names.

Simultaneously, controversy has erupted over the perceived privatization and touristification of the city's historic center. Disputes have emerged regarding the remodeling of Plaza Nueva, which includes the installation of outdoor dining terraces (veladores), and the hosting of private galas in Plaza Virgen de los Reyes. Neighborhood groups and heritage associations, such as Adepa, have voiced concerns that commercial and tourism interests are being prioritized over citizens' rights to free public spaces. Mayor José Luis Sanz has defended the municipal actions, stating that terrace installations in Plaza Nueva will be limited to specific lateral areas.
