Sevilla I prison launches equality reading club

The Instituto Andaluz de la Mujer (IAM) has launched an equality-focused reading club at the Sevilla I prison. The initiative brings together female inmates and prison staff to use literature as a tool for awareness and training regarding gender equality and rights.

As part of the program, participants engaged in activities such as the workshop ‘Anónimo era nombre de mujer’ (Anonymous was a woman's name), which explored the historical invisibility of female authors who often had to use pseudonyms or publish under their partners' names to reach readers. The club's first featured title is the novel ‘Nada’ by Carmen Laforet.

The project aims to provide inmates with direct information about available resources for gender-based violence prevention and specialized care provided by the regional administration, while also training prison personnel in equality matters.
