Sevilla I prison officer injured during inmate suicide simulation
A prison officer at the Sevilla I Penitentiary Center was injured on Saturday after an inmate allegedly feigned a suicide attempt. According to the Central Sindical Independiente de Funcionarios (CSIF), the inmate used a sheet to simulate hanging in a cell under constant surveillance. When two officers entered the cell to intervene, the inmate reportedly lunged at them and struck one worker in the neck with a punch.
The inmate was subdued and moved to isolation. While the officer's injuries are reported to be non-serious, the CSIF noted that the situation could have been worse due to the staff's actions.
This incident follows another attack at the same facility's intake module just one week prior, involving an attempted stabbing that left three workers injured. In response to these recurring events, the CSIF is demanding improved security measures, including specific protocols for inmate intake, increased staffing, better training, and the provision of specialized equipment.
