Seville 18th-century archives reveal historical classified ads
Digitalized records from the Papel Semanario de Sevilla, dating back to 1787, offer a detailed look into the daily life and commerce of 18th-century Seville. Now available through the University of Seville's Research Deposit, these historical advertisements functioned as a precursor to modern classified platforms.
The archives contain a wide variety of listings, including items for sale such as large carpets, musical table clocks, and copper plates. They also featured service advertisements, lost and found notices, and commercial products ranging from barber chairs to Catalan wine.
Specific historical advertisements included specialized cleaning products, such as a stain remover sold on Calle Génova that claimed to eliminate grease and dirt from various fabrics. These records provide a unique window into the social and economic structures of the era.
