Seville Cathedral features unique ventilation vents

The Seville Cathedral features unique architectural elements known as vents, located in the high roof areas. These small stone openings, sometimes covered by larger round stone plugs, were designed to facilitate ventilation.

Before the introduction of electricity, the cathedral relied on candles, lamps, and incense for light and liturgy. Because the cathedral's windows consist of fixed stained glass that cannot be opened, these vents acted as small chimneys to allow smoke and hot air to escape the building's upper reaches.
