Seville gala dinner sparks controversy over use of public funds and historic sites

A private gala dinner held in Plaza Virgen de los Reyes, at the foot of Seville's Giralda, has sparked controversy regarding the use of public funds and the appropriation of historic spaces. The event marked the 20th anniversary of the Escaparate Awards, organized by Escaparate magazine in collaboration with the Seville City Council.

Critics, including civil society platforms and political organizations, have expressed concern over the impact such events have on the conservation of emblematic city sites. Joaquín Egea, president of the Association for the Defense of Historical-Artistic Heritage of Andalusia (Adepa), stated that the square is not an appropriate venue for a dining area and argued that there are many other locations in Seville that would not require the appropriation of public space.

Additionally, the political coalition Adelante Andalucía has submitted a request to the regional Parliament to investigate the public expenditure involved in the event. The coalition is seeking information regarding the regional administration's investment and the advertising contracts held with the publishing company.
