Seville police dismantle copper‑theft ring targeting solar farms

The Guardia Civil’s operation Stannum in Seville, Spain, broke up a criminal network that stole copper and solar‑cable material from photovoltaic installations. Four suspects were arrested and three others are being investigated. The gang removed 111,266 m of solar cable and 2,410 m of bare copper, seizing about 250 kg of tin‑coated solar cable and two tonnes of clean copper, which were intercepted by police.

Authorities estimate the economic damage at over €300,000, covering material losses and replacement costs that threaten the development of renewable‑energy infrastructure. The investigation, prompted by multiple complaints from solar‑plant operators, revealed the thieves forced entry at night, disabled security systems, cut large amounts of cable, and sold the stolen copper through metal‑recycling channels. The operation also uncovered intimidation tactics, including threats of death against a group member.

The seized material was recovered from waste‑metal facilities and the gang’s activities were mapped through document analysis and surveillance, helping to mitigate further losses for the regional solar sector.
