Sewage spills reported in New Mexico and Texas
Two separate sewage spills have occurred in the United States, impacting local waterways and prompting safety warnings.
In Aztec, New Mexico, a storm drain leak released approximately 18,000 gallons of raw sewage into the Animas River. Local crews and utility services mobilized to contain the leak at the Hartman Park Lift Station. While the Office of Emergency Management notified water users and farmers, officials reported that the river appeared clear and the spill did not reach Lake Farmington. Irrigation ditches were advised to shut down for 24 hours as a precaution.
In East Austin, Texas, a break in a sludge transfer line at the Walnut Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant caused roughly 73,000 gallons of wastewater sludge to enter a storm drain and a nearby private pond. Austin Water advised residents to avoid contaminated soil and water in the area. While the public drinking water supply remains unaffected, residents using private wells within a half-mile of the site have been instructed to boil water before use and may require testing and disinfection.
