Mexico animal rights groups use legal injunctions to challenge bullfighting and welfare laws

Animal rights organizations are utilizing legal injunctions and local legislation to advance animal protection across various Mexican regions.

In Yucatán, Animal Héroes and PETA Latino secured a federal injunction to prevent animal cruelty during bullfights in Seyé. While the municipal government confirmed the events will proceed, they must comply with a court order prohibiting the use of swords, banderillas, or any instruments that cause bleeding, pain, or undue stress to the bulls. Similar legal challenges are being directed at bullfighting events in Doxey, Tlaxcoapan.

In Ciudad Juárez, the City Council unanimously approved a new Animal Protection and Welfare Regulation. Activists have called for adequate resources and infrastructure to ensure the new rules are effectively enforced and to combat impunity in cases of cruelty.

In Mérida, authorities are managing the aftermath of a pitbull attack in the Bojórquez neighborhood. The two dogs involved were voluntarily surrendered by their owner and are currently under the care of the Municipal Animal Care Center (CEMAA) pending a judicial resolution.
