Seychelles promotes Blue Economy and marine conservation

Seychelles is emphasizing the importance of its natural environment and the Blue Economy in the face of the triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss. On World Environment Day, the Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources highlighted how the nation's coral reefs, mangroves, and forests serve as essential tools for carbon storage and coastal protection.

Historically, Seychelles has led initiatives to prioritize ocean governance over terrestrial-focused green economy models. This includes a landmark commitment made during the Rio+20 summit to set aside 30% of its Exclusive Economic Zone for marine conservation and climate adaptation. To achieve these goals, the nation has explored debt-for-nature swaps in collaboration with organizations such as The Nature Conservancy to manage its vast marine territory.
