Seychelles tops Africa's 2026 Prosperity Index

The HelloSafe 2026 Prosperity Index has ranked Africa's most prosperous nations based on a scale of 0 to 100. The index evaluates Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Gross National Income (GNI), the Human Development Index (HDI), income distribution, and poverty levels.

Seychelles holds the top position with 98.09 points, driven by high per capita income, strong human development, and a balanced income distribution. Its economy relies heavily on tourism and fisheries, though this leaves it vulnerable to climate change and international demand fluctuations. Mauritius follows in second place with 77.09 points, noted for its economic diversification into financial services, manufacturing, and tourism.

Algeria ranks third with 54.24 points, supported by hydrocarbon revenues that fund public expenditure and infrastructure. Conversely, despite having large economies and relatively high per capita income, South Africa and Botswana occupy lower positions on the index due to the significant impact of poverty and income inequality.
