Nigeria economic reforms show positive results, according to World Bank report

President Bola Tinubu has welcomed a World Bank report indicating that Nigeria’s economic reforms are yielding positive results. The October 2026 Nigeria Development Update highlights that the economy grew by 4.2 percent in the first half of 2026, up from 3.9 percent in the same period in 2025. Additionally, the report notes that inflation decreased from 27.6 percent in January 2025 to 15.2 percent in December 2025, and the poverty rate has stabilized for the first time since 2019.

Financial indicators show improvement, with the current account surplus rising to $12 billion in the first half of 2026 and gross external reserves increasing to $53.8 billion by August 2026. The World Bank attributed these gains to reforms such as the removal of the petrol subsidy and foreign exchange market unification, which increased federation revenue by 69 percent in real terms between 2023 and 2025.

In related developments, the World Bank Group is working to mobilize up to $5.79 billion in private financing to support infrastructure and job creation, with projections of 850,000 new jobs. Meanwhile, Fitch Ratings has revised Nigeria’s sovereign credit outlook from Stable to Positive, citing stronger foreign exchange reserves and improved economic conditions.
