Seyyid Ahmed-i Kebir Er-Rufai Tomb in Samsun

The Seyyid Ahmed-i Kebir Er-Rufai Tomb, located in the Ladik district of Samsun, remains a significant spiritual and cultural site with a history spanning approximately 700 years. The structure, which is believed to date back to the early 14th century, features architecture characteristic of the Beylikler period, constructed using a combination of cut stone and brick.

The tomb houses seven sarcophagi and is identified as the resting place of Seyyid Ahmed-i Kebir Er-Rufai, a figure estimated to have lived between 1240 and 1335. He is considered a descendant or successor of Ahmed er-Rufai, the founder of the Rufai order.

Historical records from the Ottoman Archives, including a document from 1877, refer to the site as the “es-Seyyid Ahmed el-Ekber Zaviyesi” in the Ladik district. Additionally, the famous traveler Evliya Çelebi documented the site in his work, “Seyahatname,” describing it as a place for dervishes and a center of spiritual wisdom.
