Sfakia and Ardaena: Exploring the rugged heart of Crete

The Sfakia and Ardaena regions in the Chania prefecture of Crete offer a landscape defined by the White Mountains and the Libyan Sea. A notable route for travelers is the winding road from Chora Sfakion to Anopoli, often referred to as the ‘snake road’.

Anopoli, situated on a fertile plateau at an altitude of 600 meters, holds significant historical importance. The village has served as a stronghold for revolutionaries throughout various eras, including the Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian periods. Despite being destroyed in 1365 by the Venetians and in 1867 by Omer Pasha, the community has consistently rebuilt. The area is also associated with Dascalogiannis, a prominent shipping magnate and leader of the 1770 revolution.
