Gabon faces fuel shortages and rising corporate debt

Gabon is facing significant economic and logistical challenges. A recent diesel shortage in the Greater Libreville area has caused long queues at service stations, impacting transport and small businesses. While the Ministry of Petroleum and Gas attributed the issue to temporary stock declines, the situation highlights vulnerabilities in the supply chain and the high cost of fossil fuel subsidies.

Financial stability is also under scrutiny. The Gabon Oil Company (GOC) has accumulated 861.3 billion FCFA in debt, largely due to aggressive asset acquisitions. Similarly, the national refinery SOGARA faces heavy liabilities totaling 824 billion FCFA. These debt levels pose risks to public finances, especially as the country seeks to fund its 2030 structural transformation, which the African Development Bank estimates requires 696 billion FCFA annually.

In response to economic needs, the government is launching initiatives to support local development. This includes the ProxiGab digital platform, designed to connect SMEs with banks and investors, and a technical training program aimed at equipping 400 young people in Libreville with market-ready skills to foster entrepreneurship and reduce reliance on foreign expertise.
