Ségolène Royal criticizes French energy speculation and Algeria policy
Former French minister Ségolène Royal has criticized the current energy situation in France, labeling the rising energy prices as “scandalous speculation.” She noted that while France faces globalized market volatility, neighboring European nations such as Germany, Italy, and Spain are strengthening their economic ties with Algeria by signing new gas supply contracts.
Royal, who is a candidate for the Socialist primary for the 2027 presidential election and president of the France-Algeria association, also addressed the diplomatic tension between Paris and Algiers. She criticized French leaders and certain media outlets, specifically those influenced by the Rassemblement National, for “insulting” Algeria.
She defended those calling for diplomatic appeasement, rejecting accusations that such stances are the result of foreign interference. Royal pointed out that other major powers, including the United States, maintain significant exchanges with Algeria without facing similar accusations of interference, suggesting that French companies are losing market share to competitors who have successfully secured energy partnerships.
