Ségolène Royal enters Socialist primary as independent candidate

Ségolène Royal has announced her candidacy as an independent in the Socialist Party primary, marking her return to the national political stage twenty years after her presidential run. Running as a ‘free electron’ outside the traditional party framework, Royal aims to influence the debate and the future direction of the left.

Royal has explicitly rejected any alliance with the Macronist bloc, stating, ‘The center is the right.’ Instead, she is calling for a ‘union of the left’ that includes socialists, ecologists, and communists. She noted that she has already secured the necessary sponsorships from various sensitivities within the party to participate.

The primary, scheduled for October 11, will see Royal compete against six other candidates, including Raphaël Glucksmann, Olivier Faure, Philippe Brun, Jérôme Guedj, Fabien Verdier, and Emmanuel Maurel. Her candidacy introduces new strategic challenges for party organizers regarding debate schedules and representation rules, while raising questions about the long-term unity of the French left.
