Ségolène Royal highlights diplomatic tensions between France and Algeria
Former French minister Ségolène Royal has drawn attention to the diplomatic friction between France and Algeria. During recent media appearances, including an interview with the Algerian public broadcaster AL24 News, Royal suggested that France is an anomaly among Mediterranean nations, noting that other powers such as Spain, Italy, China, and the United States are actively consolidating economic partnerships with Algiers.
Royal criticized what she termed ‘algérophobie’ (Algerophobia), describing it as an electoral strategy used by certain French political factions to divert attention from domestic economic issues like inflation and public deficits. She specifically addressed the tension surrounding the 1968 agreements, which provide a special status for Algerian nationals regarding entry and employment in France, noting that calls to revise these accords are often used for political leverage.
Observers note that while political rhetoric in France often focuses on immigration and historical memory, the diplomatic standoff may result in French companies losing market share in Algeria to international competitors.
