Sgt. Morgan Wong laid to rest following CFB Wainwright fire

A memorial service was held in Edmonton on Sunday for Sgt. Morgan Wong, one of four soldiers killed during a fast-moving fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright. Wong, a 26-year-old reservist with the Loyal Edmonton Regiment serving with the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, was among those lost during a training exercise that also injured 39 others.

During the service, Buddhist practitioners performed prayers and songs. Wong’s sister, Megan, delivered a eulogy describing him as a loyal friend and a dedicated servant to his country. He had joined the Armed Forces at age 17 and had previously deployed to Latvia in 2024, where he met his wife. The couple was married last December. Before his death, Wong had been mentoring new recruits and was preparing for a second deployment abroad.
